Pia Pircher, born in Vienna, is a viol player, artist and researcher on viol music. Fascinated since her early childhood by sounds and music, she developed a keen interest while growing up into the aestatically and philosophical origin and as well as the cultural background of arts, and the expressivity of music, especially in particular on the viol.
Exploring the diversity of sounds and expressions on the viol, Pia’s aim is to find a contemporary approach to the instrument and her own speech on it.

Pia studied with Vittorio Ghielmi at the University Mozarteum Salzburg, where she received the Master of Arts with distinction in 2013 and a PhD in 2019. Further her studies brought her to the Royal College of Music London (Richard Boothby, Reiko Ichise), where she was awarded in 2014 the Artist Diploma and the Musikhochschule Trossingen (Lorenz Duftschmid), where she completed the diploma with honors in 2011. Pia has received numerous prizes and scholarships, including the first prize of the 11th Biagio-Marini-Competition, the 5th prize at the 5th Int. Viola da gamba competition, further she was finalist of the 4th Int. Competition Prince Francesco Maria Ruspoli. Pia recieved the annual art scholarship 2013/14 by the Austrian ministry of culture, the Leverhulme Postgraduate Studentship and a PRO SCIENTIA scholarship. She participated in masterclasses with Wieland Kuijken, Paolo Pandolfo and Hille Perl.

She has performed with ensembles including Le concert des nations, English Touring Opera, Armonico Tributo Austria, Staatskapelle Dresden, with artists such as Dorothee Oberlinger, Hiro Kurosaki, Jordi Savall, Reinhard Goebel and Vittorio Ghielmi. Pia has performed in venues across Europe and the Far East including the Royal Albert Hall, Semperoper Dresden, Barockfestspiele Bad Arolsen and Salzburger Festspiele as both a chamber musician and soloist.

Most recently, Pia performed as a soloist at the London Handel Festival, Queens Gallery/Buckingham Palace, the Cobe Collection, Styriarte Festival and Trigonale Festival, with the Wiener Sängerknaben, Reinhard Goebel and Dresdner Staatskapelle, and gave lectures at the international Biannual Conference on Baroque Music, the International Festival of Viols London, for PRO SCIENTA and for the Viola da gamba society of Great Britain, and the speech for the graduation ceremony at Mozarteum 2014. Further she curated a series of lectures and concert at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien about the connection of art and music and was appointed Associate Professor of Music at the American University in Cairo/Egypt.

Pia Pircher, in Wien geboren, ist eine Gambenspielerin, Künstlerin und Forscherin der Gambenmusik. Seit ihrer frühen Kindheit durch Töne und Musik fasziniert, entwickelte sie ein starkes Interesse für den ästhetischen und philosophischen Ursprung und kulturellen Hintergrund der Kunst, und die Ausdruckskraft der Musik, insbesondere auf der Gambe. Vielfalt der Klänge und Expression ist Pias Ziel, sowie eine zeitgemäße Annäherung an das Instrument und ihre eigene Sprache darauf zu finden. 

Pia studierte bei Vittorio Ghielmi am Mozarteum Salzburg, wo sie das Studium des Master of Arts 2013 mit Auszeichnung abschloss. Weiters erhielt sie das Artist Diploma 2014 am Royal College of Music London (Richard Boothby, Reiko Ichise) und 2011 das Diplom mit der Note „Sehr gut“ der Musikhochschule Trossingen (Lorenz Duftschmid). Sie hat zahlreiche Preise und Stipendien, darunter den ersten Preis des 11. Biagio-Marini-Wettbewerb, den 5. Preis beim 5. Int. Bach-Abel Wettbewerb für Viola da gamba erhalten, weiters war sie Finalistin des 4. Int. Wettbewerb Prinz Francesco Maria Ruspoli. Pia empfing das jährliche Kunststipendium 2013/14 vom österreichischen Kulturministerium, das Leverhulme Postgraduiertenstipendium und ist seit 2014 Stipendiatin der PRO SCIENTIA Studienstiftung. Sie nahm an Meisterkursen unter anderem bei Wieland Kuijken, Paolo Pandolfo und Hille Perl teil. Sie hat mit Ensembles wie Le Concert des Nations, der English Touring Opera, Armonico Tributo Österreich, Staatskapelle Dresden, mit Künstlern wie Dorothee Oberlinger, Hiro Kurosaki, Jordi Savall, Reinhard Goebel und Vittorio Ghielmi gespielt. Pia reiste in Veranstaltungsorte in ganz Europa und dem Fernen Osten, einschließlich der Royal Albert Hall, Semperoper Dresden, Barockfestspiele Bad Arolsen und Salzburger Festspiele und ist als Kammermusikerin und Solistin aufgetreten.

Zuletzt war Pia als Solistin an der Londoner Händel-Festspielen, Queens Gallery/Buckingham Palace, der Cobe Collection, Styriarte Festival und Trigonale Festival, bei den Wiener Sängerknaben, mit Reinhard Goebel und der Dresdner Staatskapelle zu hören und hielt Vorträge auf der International Biennale Conference on Baroque Music, dem Int. Festival of Viols London, für PRO Scienta und für die Viola da gamba Gesellschaft von Großbritannien in Oxford, und die Rede für die Abschlussfeier am Mozarteum 2014. Sie kuratierte eine Serie von Vorträgen und Konzerten im Kunsthistorischen Museum Wien über die Verbindungen von Kunst und Musik und wurde zur Associate Professorin für Musik an der American University in Kairo/Ägpyten ernannt.

In Konzerten ist Pia eingekleidet vom Wiener Atelier Femme Maison.
